How to Install Disqus Comment Platform On Blogger

As a blog writer you must be always interested for feedback from your readers and this facility is provided by comment section integrated in your blog. This enables you to have direct dialogue with your readers. In certain cases this dialogue results in long chat between writer and reader. This facilitates your readers to share their views more clearly with blogger. The blogger expedites its bloggers with facility of comment on each page of your blog post from their readers. In one of our earlier blogs we have already discussed about the persons who can comment on blog written by you.Today we will discuss How to Install Disqus Comment Platform On Blogger .

Problems With Default Blogger Comment Form:

The impact of changing technology can also be witnessed on Blogger Comment. Recently it has integrated facility of threaded comments, and more updates are expected from blogger in its comment box. If you are satisfied with the improvements than I feel this tutorial may not beneficial for you. But if you are not satisfied as I am than this tutorial will benefit you. You friends personally I feel that there are some variants which I would never like to be present in my comment box. These include:

1. Absence of Avatars: It is really troubling that only bloggers can use feature avatar, in such situation I feel that commentators should also be facilitated with facility of avatar. Because there are some commentators to who even blogger does not know.

2. Anonymous Comments: By Default blogger lets anybody comment on my blog though its anonymous feature. Though I have the facility to approve them before getting published but these are mostly the comments which are spam. So they kind of piss me. I dont need this anonymous commenting option.

3. Redirection after comment: The page should be refreshed as soon as comment is placed on your blog. Right now its not happening.

4. Inability of posting codes: The most worrisome drawback of Blogger comment is that most of them are designed with HTML codings and users look for seeking its help. There are some cases where commentators post their comments with HTML code and they do not appear after they are published.

What is Good for Blogger:

There are various forms of comments which are congruent with Blogger and can be easily implemented and configured if you want to adopt them. However moving towards 3rd party comment options some of them are incompatible for blogger. Although it is not so with comments but the problem pertains how it responses to Blogger. If we adopt some other comment option than we need to think that will it be possible to return again to default platform. On the other side if you adopt for 3rd party commenting platform without going through its drawbacks, you will be in position where you will be required to take some important decisions. There are some features which we need to discuss.

The new comment platform.

1. Should be capable of shifting ongoing blogger comment without following any mistake and is capable of reinstate comments back if someone wants to go back on default blogger comment form

2. Should be capable of easy transition with comments to another comment platform

3. Should be capable of protecting from spam comments automatically

4. should Integrate feature of threaded comments

5. Should be Capable of viewing HTML coding

6. Should be easily accessed on mobiles

7. Should be displaying avatars for every user and facilitate with additional login options facilitating guest commentators

8. Should be capable of identifying comments and commentators should be able to subscribe for receiving replies of comments

9. Should be catchy and should not be redirected after publication

10. Should be displayed on all pages and can be disable from specific pages

11. Should be more enhanced with integration of features like smilies and icons for emotions.

While searching for more interesting comment platforms it is noticed that Facebook, IntenseDebate, Livefyre and Disqus are integrated with attractive comment platform. However Google is trying to integrate feature of social plugin similar to Facebook, but it would of no use to buy premium membership for enjoying comment platform by paying from your pocket. Although it would be wrong to comment on their performance without practicing them. Anyhow my preferred option is to go Disqus.

Relevance of Disqus:

The most worrisome feature about comments platform on Facebook, IntenseDebate or Livefyre is that they do not provide reliable comment import and lack transition features. Of-course IntenseDebate carries same benefits but all of them work as baby carriage and not trust worthy. One more reason why I do not prefer to use it due to its appearance and therefore consider it as baby carriage. But all this is my personal feeling they might be good for others to use them as they would not create worst impact on your domains.

Although Disqus has ability of comment importation, migration, avatar and protection from spams. However instead of discussing more about these features and make you feel bore let us discuss the benefits and drawbacks of Disqus.

Benefits of Disqus:

1. It facilitates the user to integrate additional exciting features comprising of blocking persons, tracking comments followed by links and amending comments

2. In its list of integrating additional features it is capable of integrating spam protection provided by Akismat along with Disqus protection already installed

3. It also favors media attachments for instance images and videos posted in comments section

4. It also supports synchronization of comments with blogger along with importation of comments

5. It favors export of comments in XML format

6. The section designed for comments is supported by all possible options

7. Commentators can also include comments received from other viewers

8. It provides facility of liking and disliking comments and different pages separately

9. It displays search made for your posts in Twitter and present them as reactions

Drawbacks of Disqus:

1. If your blog is enabled with Blogger mobile template in that situation Disqus does not respond to mobile comment form integrated by you and mobile commentators will be provided with default comment form provided by Blogger

2. If you have used feature of Blogger threaded comments for your blog, then importing them on Disqus will disable their threaded view, but it will show them in series placed one below each other

3. However Disqus does not support static pages and can be activated by enabling them manually. But it does not disable comment form on specific static pages

4. Avatars appearing on Blogger comments will not displayed on Disqus after they have imported from Blogger, but they will be taken over by default avatar of Disqus

5. Disqus does not facilitate you to preview comments until unless you do not post them, as you performed on Blogger.com. However it facilitates you to edit comment after they have been posted. But Guest commentators cannot edit comments made by them if they log from other ID address

6. It does not support icons for similies or emotions.

I am sure now you would have understood the reason why I favored integration of Disqus in my blog. Now if you also wish to integrate the same feature for your blog than you need to consider all points which I have discussed above. Apart from above mentioned features Disqus also supports additional features like comment analytics, ranks, realtime updating, however all these features can be enjoyed after making necessary payments. Apart from this if you are interested to integrate more add-ons in your comment platform for your blog, and then Disqus provides you different packages depending upon your requirement. As far as I am concerned i am satisfied with performance of Disqus.

But before you start installing Disqus comment platform for your blog you need to check for following requirements:

  • Get assured that you have written blog to receive comments from every reader. If you do not know your reader you cannot know who will comment on your blog
  • Get assured that your blog is designed according to blogger layout. For this I feel you need not have concern for that if you are using blogger for first time. But before that I would suggest you to go through following precautions:

                          8 Steps to Install Disqus On Your Blog:

1. Get your blog registered with Disque and provide all required information for creating account on Disqus sign up and click on continue option.

PS: Here I would like to mention that if you already got yourself registered with Disqus than click on Already have a profile? Placed under primary moderator enabling you to login with your account and submit your blog.

2. After logging to your Disqus account, you will be moved to installation page, on which you have to click on blogger option;

3. You will be directed to Install Disqus on Blogger page. Here you have to take your third step i.e., clicking Add site “ Your Site Name” to blogger option.

4. After you are done with first three steps the fourth step will display a new browser tab or provide you page to add Disqus widget in your blog. Now click on Add widget option to add disqus widget for layout of your blog and comment form for blogger which will be replaced by Disqus widget;

5. Now go to individual post of your blog and check whether Disqus is active on your blog or not.

Notes:

If you face problem with appearance of Disqus comment form on your blog, than you can take help from Blogger Installation Help, from Disqus support desk or feel free to shoot me a comment.

If you find Disqus is not operating for you than do not proceed for next step until unless Disqus does not start working for you.

6. If you see comments already existing on your blog and you wish them to import on Disqus than you need to follow following steps. You can also synchronize new comments made on Disqus with your account on Blogger also.

Note: If you do not want to carry out any of these steps you are free to leave them. But I would suggest you to get synchronization feature enable on your blog even if you do not want to import your comments.

Before moving towards 7th step let us understand steps required for integration synchronization comment features:

Following of these steps will enable you to import your comments to Disqus and you will find them appearing with Disqus on each blog once you have imported comments on your blog. These steps include:

i. Move to install disqus on page of Blogger and move to tools option;

ii. Move to import option and click on blogger;

iii. Move to Import comment from blogger option;

iv. Disqus will enable you to have look to blogger, click on grand access option and your comments will be imported and you will be informed through email.

Notes:

  • Usually importation process takes 24 hours to import your comments, sometimes even lesser than it say for instance 18 hours. If it goes beyond 24 hours than you can go through Disqus System Status to see where the mistake is taking place;
  • Remember you do not request to import your comments once you have already made it. Otherwise it will take more time to finish the process.

Now as you have learned the process of importing your comments, let us also understand the process of synchronizing Disqus comments with Blogger.

This will enable you to synchronize comments made through Disqus with Blogger. This will enable you to also access comments through blogger comments. Although if you delete comments from Blogger comment tab there will not be any affect on Disqus and same if you delete comment from Disqus it won’t affect comments on Blogger.

i. Install Disqus on Blogger page and move to Tools tab;

ii. Move to Import tab and click on Blogger;

iii. Now move to  Enable Syncing button for synchronizing comments on Disqus with blogger;

Now let us come back to our series of precaution which you should follow:

7. Move to settings options;

8. Now go to tabs for making changes according to your requirements. If you do not know how to use setting options take help of help documentation before you make any changes. These changes can be witnessed on Disqus comment system.

You also can make changes in basic settings, you add/remove features, make changes in permission and email notification and remove your site from Disqus.

Notes:

  • If you wish to enable Akismat feature to get protect from spam, then you need to use Akismat API key. Akismat can be used for personal blogs. For this login to Akismat sign up page, select personal plan (there are different plans for spam protection depending upon your requirement) for this you need to provide necessary information whereas settings contribution is set to $0.00. After providing necessary information you will be informed through Akismat for use of Akismat API keys.
  • If you want to take maintain your Facebook login on Disqus, and then you have to provide information regarding your Facebook application ID or API key. For this you need to read instructions determined for creating facebook application for your site for creating new applications and acquiring API keys.

Moderators: This feature will enable you add or delete moderator and determine new setting related with moderation of comments;

Blacklists: This feature enables you to restrict publication of comments with specific words which need to be approved by moderator. You also have facility to block commentators who you feel are suspicious. You can let only trusted commentators to post their comments followed by their email, IP address, username and domain name.

Appearance - Here comes favorite part. You can change theme of your comment form and various attributes related to Disqus comment form including avatars, position, date/time formatting, threading and more.

Additional Information:

  • If readers of your blog comment on your blog through Guest commenting option and did not signed for Gravatar, then you should tell them to sign for Gravatar and download their image so as to let you know your avatar when they comment on your blog. Gravatar is considered as commonly used option for commentators supported by avatars while they post their comments on site;
  • If you want to disable commenting on certain page of your post than there is not any option available on Disqus setting. Because this can be utilized only with Blogger, for this you just need to follow the conventional method of disabling comments from specific pages;
  • Disqus comment form will not appear on static pages of your blog, but they can be activated manually. However it is important to mention here that they it will then appear on every static page and cannot be disabled for specific static page.

Enabling Disqus comment form on all static pages:

A. Move to Blogger dashboard;

B. Click on title of your blog;

C. Move to template tab; (Before you edit your template you should save its copy in other folder for future reference)

D. Click on Edit HTML option placed before blog preview;

E. Click on proceed option for next step;

F. Click on expand widget template option;

G. Search for Disqus in your template;

H. There will several matches among which you have to search for following match;

           <b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == "item"'>

I. Replace the above match with following line

           <b:if cond='data:blog.pageType != "index"'>

> Disqus can be installed on multiple blogs and can be managed by same user account. Just register your next blog and carry out the same steps which you have performed earlier;

> Move to disqus dashboard and click on name of your blog located at left pane to moderate comments, find necessary tools and widgets to check settings of your blog.

PS: You can also check basic moderation option for each of your comment on comment form. Click on Moderate link appearing below comment after which a new window will appear on your screen with necessary options.

I know this tutorial has been quite lengthy for you but am sure you would have enjoyed it and will go through it.
